An engine head gasket is a ringed panel that is mounted between the engine block and cylinder head. Its job is to act as a barrier to prevent coolant and motor oil from leaking into nearby cylinders. Unluckily, the gasket head is located next to one of the hottest parts of the motor. If your engine overheats, it can cause the head gasket to ultimately fail. A blown head gasket can cause irreversible engine damage and should be inspected as soon as it’s safe to do so. To prevent a disaster from happening, here are five of the most prevalent signs that your vehicle has a blown head gasket.
Signs of a Blown Head Gasket:
Your engine will overheat when oil leaks into the coolant system, which disables the coolant from adequately cooling off the engine. Our motor experiences elevated temperatures, especially when driving at low speeds.
Misfiring and Rough Idling
Depending on the vehicle, some head gaskets are located between combustion chambers. These chambers require tremendous pressure to ensure efficiency and maximum power. With a blown head gasket, the assemblies cannot handle the stress, which will result in rough idling and engine misfiring.
White/Gray Smoke Emitting from the Tailpipe
If a leak exists, the coolant could slip into the combustion chamber and get burned with the gasoline. The process will most likely produce an unusual white smoke, primarily visible in the mornings or cooler days. If you notice this white smoke, please bring your vehicle to our shop immediately.
Milky Build-Up Under Oil Cap
The inside of your oil cap should be dry when the head gasket is intact. However, if you notice a cloudy substance on your oil cap, your oil may have mixed with the coolant, corrupting the oil. You will need to displace the head gasket and change the contaminated oil as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
